In this booklet we present some of our 3R solutions and how local champions have adopted and replicated their experiences by sheer enthusiasm, understanding and perseverance. The impact it has on water and food security is huge and is not limited to people, but includes animal welfare and the wider environment as well. 3R stands for the Recharge, Retention and Reuse of water: a collection of technologies to keep water in the local system. 3R technologies store rainwater in the wet season, making it available to use in the dry season. 3R helps to increase access to water by reversing degradation, preventing soil erosion, and improving soil moisture recharge and retention. The point of departure is the bufferfunction of households or landscapes, which allows people to deal with regular water variability as well as the dramatic variations that accompany climate change. Each of the stories tells a personal tale, and I would like to sincerely thank each and every one of the featured champions for sharing these experiences, which is so extremely important to do in order to fully exploit the potential of rainwater harvesting.
